3 Fat Loss Tips

This should be an easy question to answer, right? You’re not sticking to your diet or you’re not exercising enough?

Whilst this might be the approach of many Personal trainers, I go quite a lot deeper in our quest to help you achieve the body of your dreams. This email is going to explore some of the reasons you may not have necessarily thought about when you think about fat loss.

Despite what you have heard, weight loss isn’t all about diet and exercise. Very rarely do I come across someone who is healthy and overweight. Health is such a large component of fat loss and it is often undervalued.

If your body is malfunctioning before you start a diet, you will probably end up joining the many people that either hit a plateau or rebound the weight they lost straight back on again. By fixing your underlying malfunctions in your body, you can create a healthier and more efficient system, which will make it a lot easier for your body to lose fat permanently.

Below are 3 reasons why you may be struggling to lose fat, together with some top tips to help address them:

An insight into a 1-2-1 Personal Training session with one of my clients, Beatriz.

In today's hectic world we are constantly fighting against stress. Money, work and lack of sleep are all levels of stress that can cause people to have elevated levels of the stress hormone called cortisol. If left unchecked, high levels of cortisol can cause your immune system to weaken and damage the health of your digestive system.

If any of these forms of stress are left unchecked, you will find fat loss very difficult.

My top tip for managing your stress levels is to make sure you go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. You must make sure you get at least 6-7 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night consistently.

It’s a fact, we take in more toxins every day than we can eliminate. That is if you put that many in of course! Did you know that most of the food we eat, the water we drink and the air that we breathe is toxic? Many of the chemicals found in our food cause hormonal imbalances that lead to weight gain. Toxins slow down your thyroid which affects your metabolism and slows down fat loss.

The liver is the organ that is responsible for metabolising fat, if it is burdened with toxins you will really struggle to lose body fat. There are studies that say that the more toxic you are the more fat the body creates as a protection mechanism.

My top tips for helping cut back on your toxic load is to cut back on processed foods and go for organic fresh lean meats, fish, fruits and vegetables. Fit a water filter and drink clean purified water. You can also support your liver by taking a supplement called milk thistle.

Digestive System

If your digestive system is malfunctioning you will find fat loss very difficult to achieve. Your digestive health can be compromised in a few ways.

Poor digestion can be a result of low hydrochloric acid levels in your stomach. If this is low you will not be able to break your food down properly in the stomach, therefore you will be unable to absorb all the quality nutrients.

Inflammation of the gut can be caused by food sensitivities. An inflamed gut produces a stress response which elevates cortisol production. If you have read the first section of this article you will be a lot clearer on the effects cortisol plays in the fat loss process.

My top tip to help improve your digestive system is to remove allergenic foods from your diet. The classics are wheat, dairy and gluten. Go without them for 14 days and then reintroduce them one by one to find out which one causes a reaction.

Your ability to lose body fat and improve your health goes deeper than just diet and exercise.

In addressing some of the points in this email, you are making a commitment to your own health. If you make this a part of your life, you will continue to lose body fat and you will keep it off long term.
